All calculations were made using the Retrofit Land Cover Change Dataset (2003) of the Multi‐Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium (MRLCC)(http://www.mrlc.gov), an interagency working group led by the US Geological Survey. This dataset was used to derive 1992 forest cover, 2001 forest cover, and all forest‐related classes of land cover change for the southern United States. The Retrofit Land Cover Change Dataset contains additional information on other types of land cover change, for the entire U.S. World Resources Institute, Southern Forests for the Future
States. Forest cover area and change by county was calculated by overlaying the Retrofit Change data with U.S. county boundaries (Tele Atlas North America, Inc., 2008). A full list of the land cover change classes provided in the Retrofit Land Cover Change Dataset can be found online at http://www.mrlc.gov/changeproduct_definitions.php.
